April Lawn Tips for a Perfect Spring Lawn

April is the perfect time to rejuvenate your lawn after winter. With longer days and warming soil, it’s the ideal month for feeding, mowing, and tackling bare patches.

In this guide, we’ll share the top April lawn care tips to help you create a lush, healthy lawn just in time for spring!

Is it okay to cut grass in April?

Yes, it’s perfectly okay to cut grass in April, and in fact, it’s often the ideal time to start your mowing routine for the year.

As the soil warms and grass begins to grow more actively, a light trim can help promote healthy growth and encourage a thicker lawn.

Before you do anything, make sure the ground is not too wet as mowing on saturated soil can cause damage.

Set your mower blades higher than usual for the first few cuts to avoid stressing the grass, and never remove more than one-third of the grass height in a single mow.

Regular but gentle mowing in April sets the stage for a healthy and vibrant lawn all season long.

What is the best fertiliser to use in April?

The best lawn feed to use in April is a phased-release granular fertilizer.

This type of fertilizer slowly releases nutrients over time, providing a consistent supply of nourishment to your grass throughout the spring and early summer.

Unlike liquid fertilizers, which offer a quick boost but can wash away with rainfall or irrigation, granular fertilizers ensure a longer-lasting effect and are more efficient in feeding your lawn.

The slow release feed helps redice the risk of burning your grass while promoting steady growth. Applying a granular fertiliser in April will help build a strong foundation for a lush, green lawn that can better withstand the upcoming summer months.

Here’s a quick overview on the types of lawn feed

Pre Seed Fertiliser

If you’re planning to renovate your lawn in the spring the only thing we suggest is a pre-seed fertiliser suitable for sowing new grass seeds

If you’re wondering what is a pre-seed fertiliser then it’s quite easy to explain. Simply put, pre seeding fertilisers (also known as starter fertiliser) have lower nitrogen, less harmful chemicals and a high phosphorus content for root development.

Spring Lawn Fertiliser

If you’re not seeding your lawn then I would suggest to use a spring/summer lawn fertilizer such as our dark green lawn feed which is much higher in nitrogen.

A phased release fertiliser with high nitrogen content is going to boost the lawn out of winter wake it up, and trigger lots of new growth.

All in one Fertiliser

The third type of fertilizer is an all-in-one type of product now when you’re using an all-in-one type of product

It’s going to have your fertiliser itself, it’s going to have things like weed killers in there and it’s going to have things like iron in there to control moss

Now these products can be useful if you’re quite new to lawn care but they do need to be used with caution and make sure you follow the application rates.

April Tips For A Perfect Spring Lawn

What month is best to kill weeds?

April is an excellent time for killing weeds in your lawn because the soil is warming up and weed growth is just beginning. As temperatures rise, weeds such as dandelions and moss start to sprout, making it easier to target them before they have a chance to spread.

At this stage, weeds are still in their early growth phase, meaning they’re more vulnerable to herbicides or a weed pulling tool

Applying a weed killer or herbicide in April helps prevent weed seeds from germinating, while also dealing with any existing weeds.

By acting early, you can reduce weed competition and give your grass the best chance to establish a strong, healthy root system throughout the growing season.

Where weeds are emerging you can use a selective weed control treatment that says “kills weeds not lawns”

Can you sow grass seed in April?

April is a great time to sow grass seed, especially as the soil begins to warm up and the days become longer.

During this month, temperatures are typically ideal for seed germination, with the soil reaching a temperature range that encourages healthy growth.

Sowing grass seed in April allows it to take advantage of the natural rainfall and milder weather conditions, helping the seeds establish strong roots before the summer heat sets in.

How I like to apply grass seed is to do some scarification or aeration first they are brilliant processes to start this time of year.

I like to scarify and aerate clear the debris out of the lawn so the lawn can breathe and give it an opportunity to receive any of the new seeds and the fertilizer that you’re going to put down

Then a light covering of dressing on the top of that and then after I’ve put the top dressing on I’m going to tread or roll it in

Can you top dress lawn in April?

Grass seed wants to germinate in the ground so when you tread it into the ground or put a layer of soil on the top that’s going to help promote great seed to soil contact and it will improve your success rate of germination.

Top dressing involves spreading a thin layer of soil, compost, or a specialised lawn dressing mix over your grass, which helps improve soil structure, enhance drainage, and provide essential nutrients.

Doing this in April allows the grass to benefit from the added nutrients as it starts its growing season. Additionally, top dressing helps level out any uneven areas in the lawn, improve grass root development, and reduce thatch build-up. Just be sure to apply the top dressing evenly and not too thickly to avoid smothering the grass.

Using a lawn leveller or top dressing spreader can help get the perfect coverage
