We’ve got so much going on in the lawn in the months of September and October and I’m going to be talking about the five key things you can to get the most out of your lawn this month
1) Overseeding your Lawn
September and October can be an ideal time to over seed your lawn
We have the high soil temperature from the summer which will aid grass germination but also the promise or rain and milder weather into the autumn
Spring and autumn are the best times to seed your lawn as the grass will be actively growing and has enough time to grow for the winter

2) Applying Lawn Feed
As the summer is drawing to a close we are moving away from high nitrogen spring / summer feeds and close to Autumn lawn feeds
If you are ready to purchase your next feed then go for the Dark Green Autumn Lawn Fertiliser which is lower in nitrogen but high iron for a dark green pop
At this time of year, we should avoid applying too much nitrogen to the lawn. Instead, focus on strengthening the plant and its root systems for winter.
Applying lawn fertiliser in conjunction with other products like wetting agents will help your lawn rebound after the summer.
3) Scarify your Lawn
Scarification is the process of removing some of the debris that sits in your lawn through a rake or tines
Scarifying machines are fantastic garden tools often coming with two separate cartridges. The first cartridge is an aerator or slitting cartridge and the second is a rake or spring tine cartridge
The benefits of scarification are
- removal of any debris that’s in the lawn
- reduce the levels of moss
- removing thatch which allows water and nutrients into the soil profile
- Improved germination with better seed to soil contact when overseeding
The amount of material that you’re goingto be removing is really going to be dependent on the overall health of your lawn and how often that you’ve been maintaining it throughout the season
This can range from a few buckets full of debris right the way up to several wheelie bins full of scarified material

4) Killing Moss in Autumn
If the weather is turning wetter, this can promote growth of moss in the lawn.
You can remove moss by applying a moss killer to your lawn.
Many moss killers contain iron sulphate as the active ingredient so applying this first then raking or scarification after is a popular choice to do for September Lawncare
5) Killing Autumn Weeds
For any remaining weeds still rearing their ugly heads September and October are the latest time to tackle before the season finishes
Autumn is an ideal time to kill weeds in your lawn. Weed killers have maximum impact when the weeds are actively growing and the soil temperate are right.
Remember to use a dedicated weed killer “Kills Weeds not Lawns” which is selective and will not kill the grass when used correctly
Watch : September Lawncare Tips

Matt. I’m just starting to get into the care of our lawns (500+sqm)
I want to read your tips for September.
Unfortunately, like most men, reading instructions from a “wordy” text isn’t the easiest.
I’m sure that others would find it easier if the fantastic tips and recommendations were in bullet points.
These would be easier to follow and stand out more.
Don’t stop what your doing – it’s great content – just trying to make it easier to follow.
Thanks Stephen, normally they are formatted more structured but I can see what you mean about that article!
