June Lawn Tips: Feeding, Mowing And More

If your lawn is looking a little wild after spring growth, you are not alone. June is when grass is energetic, the weather can swing between showers and warm spells which increases growth rate.

This guide provides effective lawn care tips for June including: feeding, mowing and more so you can keep a healthy, resilient lawn through summer without overdoing it.

Why Lawns Behave Differently In June

By June, soil temperatures are comfortably up, daylight hours are long, and grass growth is strong. That combination means lawns recover quickly from cutting but are also vulnerable to stress if we cut too short or feed on dry soil.

UK weather in June is famously changeable. One week can be cool and showery, the next hot and dry, and your lawn will respond quickly to these swings.

In short, June lawn care is about responding to what the weather is doing right now. If conditions are warm and damp, lean into growth with regular mowing and light feeding. If they swing hot and dry, protect the sward by mowing higher, watering sensibly and delay feeding until there is more moisture.

Quick June Lawn Tips

Here is the quick overview you can follow throughout the month:

  • Mowing frequency: little and often. Aim for every 4 to 7 days depending on growth. Follow the one third rule – never remove more than a third of the leaf in a single cut.
  • Mowing height: raise the deck slightly compared with spring if the weather turns hot or dry. See the height guide below.
  • Feeding: only if the lawn needs it and soil is moist. Opt for a light summer lawn feed, applied evenly and watered in if rain is not due.
  • Watering: established lawns usually cope without regular watering. Prioritise new lawns, new seed, and recently patched areas.
  • Weeds: spot-remove by hand or spot-treat persistent offenders. For established lawns you can treat broadleaf weeds with a selective weed killer like resolver or weedol for lawns (kills weeds, not lawns).
  • Edges and traffic: tidy edges for a crisp look and rotate heavy footfall areas to prevent compaction patches.

Should I Feed My Lawn In June In The UK?

Yes it’s important to keep up with regularly feeding your lawn if conditions are suitable. Ask these questions first:

  1. Does the lawn look pale, thin or tired despite regular mowing? If so, a light summer lawn feed can help.
  2. Is the soil moist? If the ground is dry and there is no rain forecast, hold off. Feeding on dry soil risks scorch and stress.
  3. What did you use in spring? If a spring feed was applied recently and the lawn looks healthy, you may skip feeding until later summer. We recommend applying the dark green spring & summer feed every 8-12 weeks.

How To Feed Safely In June

  • Choose a balanced summer feed suitable for warm weather growth.
  • Apply evenly at the recommended rate using a spreader on a still day.
  • If rain is not due within 24 hours, water the lawn after feeding so granules dissolve and move off the leaf.
  • Keep children and pets off until the product has been watered in and has dried.

Signs You Can Skip Feeding

  • Rich green colour with steady growth
  • No obvious thinning or yellowing in high-traffic areas
  • Good recovery after mowing

Feeding is a tool, not a rule. A little restraint in hot, dry weather protects the lawn.

How Often Should I Cut The Grass In June?

Growth is at its peak, so expect to mow more often than you did in April or early May. Most family lawns are happiest with little-and-often mowing in June:

  • Fast growth weeks: every 4 to 5 days
  • Average growth weeks: every 5 to 7 days
  • After a holiday or wet spell: raise the deck and reduce height gradually over 2 to 3 cuts rather than dropping straight back to your usual setting

Sticking to the one third rule matters more than hitting a rigid schedule. If the lawn jumps ahead while you were away or it rained for days, use two or three gentler cuts to bring it back into line.

Suggested Mowing Heights For June

Use these practical ranges as a starting point and tweak for your mower and lawn type:

  • Family lawn: 35 to 45 mm in typical weather; raise to 45 to 55 mm during hot, dry spells
  • Fine ornamental lawn: 25 to 35 mm in typical weather; raise to 35 to 40 mm if heat builds
  • Shady areas: add 5 mm compared to your sunny settings to give more leaf for photosynthesis

Sharpen blades at the start of summer if you have not already. A clean cut heals faster and reduces moisture loss.

What Height Should I Set The Mower In Hot, Dry Weather?

Raise the cutting height by one or two notches when temperatures climb and rain tails off. Longer leaf blades shade the soil, keep roots cooler, and slow evaporation. Practical targets:

  • Family lawn target in hot, dry spells: 50 mm
  • Fine lawn target in hot, dry spells: 35 to 40 mm

Also switch to conservation mode for a while:

  • Skip a cut rather than forcing the lawn down
  • Leave clippings if your mower can mulch, to return moisture and a small nutrient boost
  • Avoid edging too tightly where soil is exposed to the sun

Should I Water An Established Lawn During June?

Usually, no. Established lawns are resilient and can safely go brown for a few weeks, then green up again when rain returns. Watering is most valuable for new seed, new turf, and recently repaired patches, which do not yet have deep root systems.

If you decide to water, do it properly or not at all. Little-and-often watering encourages shallow roots and makes drought stress worse. Instead:

  • Water deeply and occasionally: aim to wet the top 100 to 150 mm of soil
  • Timing: early morning is best to reduce evaporation and discourage disease
  • Rough guide: 10 to 20 mm of water per session, adjusted for your soil type
  • Focus areas: new lawns, south-facing slopes, and spots sheltered from rainfall by walls or trees

If a hosepipe restriction is introduced, pause feeding and accept a slightly longer cut until conditions improve.

Can I Scarify Or Overseed In June?

Heavy renovation is best left for early autumn when moisture is reliable and temperatures are gentle. June can be too hot and dry for heavy scarifying as it can expose the soil, losing precious moisture and encouraging weeds.

You can still make light-touch improvements:

  • Micro-repairs: sprinkle a small amount of seed and topdress very locally where a pet or footpath has thinned an area. Keep it well watered.
  • Surface thatch control: use a lawn rake to lift minor thatch and stand the grass up before mowing, but avoid aggressive scarification.
  • Aeration: a light pass with a spike aerator in compacted hotspots can help water penetrate more effectively.

Save full renovations till September when there is more moisture.

What Is The Best Way To Deal With Weeds In June?

First, decide your tolerance. A few daisies can be charming and great for pollinators. If you prefer a cleaner look:

  • Hand weeding: lift plantains, dandelions and other rosettes with a weeding knife, removing as much root as possible. Fill holes with a pinch of soil and a sprinkle of seed.
  • Mowing tactics: do not scalp to hide weeds. Cutting too short weakens grass and encourages more weeds.
  • Prevention: maintain healthy density with the right mowing heights and sensible feeding. Thick grass leaves fewer gaps for weeds to colonise.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Cutting too short before a hot spell: raises stress and invites brown patches. Keep to the ranges above and raise the deck in dry weather.
  • Feeding on dry soil: risks scorch. Wait for rain or water in thoroughly after application.
  • Watering little and often: wastes water and trains shallow roots. Water deeply and less often, prioritising new lawns.
  • June renovation urge: scarifying or major overseeding now often disappoints. Schedule heavy work for autumn.
  • Ignoring traffic patterns: football corners, washing line spots and pet runs get compacted. Move activity weekly and give worn areas a light fork and a brush-in of fine soil.

What Tools And Products Are Worth Using In June?

You do not need a shed full of kit to nail June lawn care. A simple, reliable lineup does the job:

  • Rotary mower with a sharp blade: robust for family lawns and adjustable for seasonally higher cuts
  • Spreader: for accurate, even feeding when required
  • Rake and lawn brush: to lift the grass before mowing and tidy debris
  • Watering can or hose with a rose head: for targeted watering of new seed and patches
  • Summer lawn feed: lighter nutrient profile suited to warm weather growth
  • Grass seed for patching: keep a small bag handy for micro-repairs after hand weeding or compaction relief
  • Choose from a range of high quality grass seed mixes to suit your lawns conditions so it can thrive all year round. Match the mix to how you use the space. For instance Hard-wearing mixes suit family lawns. If parts of your lawn are shaded, look for a shade-tolerant mix for those areas.

Choose tools you can store, consider a tool storage unit to keep your tools tidy. Consistent lawn care is the key to a beautiful lawn.

Final Tips And Seasonal Reminder

June rewards gentle consistency. Mow little and often, keep heights sensible, and only feed if the lawn asks for it and the soil is moist. Prioritise new lawns and patches for watering, and accept that established turf can safely rest if the month turns dry. Tidy edges, rotate footfall, and save heavy work for early autumn.

With these June lawn care tips in place, your lawn will carry strong colour and density into July and beyond.

Matt, I have a good stock of your products but there is always a question in respect to granular feed , especially time release.
My large lawn need a powerful rotary mower with rear heavy roller.
What happens to the slow release granular feed when passed over, say within a week, although my schedule is some 5 to 6 days as it grows quite fast.
Is is sucked up into the disposal bag or will it be left on the soil at the base of the grass ?
    Many thanks
    Dave

    1. Hi Dave – our feeds are 1-2mm micro granules which scatter more evenly and get right down into the soil compared to many other cheaper options going for a larger granule size. After a few days and watering they shouldnt be picked up at normal cutting heights but you could easily do a test pass and check the box to see if theres any white and blue coated granules in there, though i doubt it as they break down in the lawn for months!

  3. My lawn has been nice and green but last 4/6 weeks gone my lawn has lost the green colour and has a lot of straw like blades mixed with grass I water and green machine and seaweed 3 weeks ago no change I would scarify but the machine seems to take a lot off even on high setting and feels quite thick if picture is required then I’ll send one on request mr alan hall
