Comprehensive Guide to Full Lawn Renovation in the UK

A healthy lawn not only looks great but also provides a comfortable place to play, relax and entertain.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the process of full lawn renovation in the UK, including scarification, aeration, overseeding, and fertilization.

Step 1: Aeration

Aeration is the first step in the lawn renovation process. Aeration relieves soil compaction and creates a nice seed bed for your new grass to grow in.

Using a hollow core aerator is a popular method that helps pull plugs out of the soil to help create a better environment for the new seed to grow.

Step 2: Scarification

Scarification is designed to remove any thatch from the soil and create a better seed bed for the grass to grow.

Scarification should be done in two passes, starting with a lighter pass and then adjusting the blade to go a little deeper on the second pass. After the first pass, you’ll need to rake up the debris to prepare for the second pass.

Step 3: Overseeding

Once the lawn is scarified, it’s time to overseed using a high quality grass seed. It’s important to do a generous overseeding to get the lawn thickened up. Depending on the weather, the grass should start growing in 2 to 4 weeks.

Step 4: Top Dressing and Fertilization

Finally, top dress the lawn with a layer of soil and fertilise with a pre seed fertiliser it to boost the growth and help the seed access all the key nutrients it needs.

Pre seed fertilisers will also feed your existing grass and help it rebound quickly after the renovation.
